The purpose of this group is to prepare your child for the routines expected at school alongside their peers in a small group setting. This group is a great way to prepare your child for their transition to prep in a supportive and structured environment. In addition to direct supports with your child, this group also includes additional parent education sessions that bring parents together to provide them with the tools to support their child during their transition to primary school.

The group will cover the following activities:

  • Fine motor skills

  • Attention and engagement

  • Working in pairs/small groups on joint tasks

  • Practicing following instructions

  • Practicing how to ask for help

  • Sharing and turn taking with peers

  • In the group the therapist will lead activities such as mat time, writing and drawing activities at the table, cutting and craft skills, and self-management skills like managing their school bag and snacks independently.

Program Format:

This group runs during Term 4 across 10 sessions, including:

  • 1x pre and 1x post parent education session via Telehealth (Zoom) for 1 hour

  • Weekly 1.5 hour group sessions across 8 weeks within the clinic environment

  • Home activities provided after each session to generalise practice to home

A post group report will be prepared to provide a summary & guide next steps.

Parent education sessions will explore:

  • Preparing for new routine, new school

  • Tips on how to work collaboratively with your child’s new school, building school connectedness from the start!

  • Navigating your child’s NDIS and school supports

  • Recommendations to prepare your child for day one of school

During each group session, the therapist will lead activities and collaboration with the group, with home activities and tasks shared with families to continue school transition preparations at home.
