The High School Readiness Group aims to support your child to develop the school skills and support plans so that they feel prepared for their transition to high school. The group setting provides an opportunity for children undergoing the transition from primary school to high school to come together, collaborate and learn skills that will support their transition. Our goal is to empower each child to gain an understanding of how they learn best and develop a ‘toolkit’ of supports that they can use when starting at their new school. The group will run in clinic with a group of same aged children, with additional parent/caregiver sessions scheduled to support readiness for the whole family!
The group will cover the following areas:
Develop an understanding of how they learn best, who can support them at school and gain insight into how they can advocate for their own learning support needs.
Explore their new school environment and visualise what their new routines will look like.
Develop tools so that they can use to organise themselves and their belongings
Understand how to follow a timetable and manage expectations across their school week
Practice using a computer to engage in learning tasks
Explore what new friendships and social activities may look like
Program Format:
This group runs during Term 4 across 10 sessions, including:
1x pre and 1x post parent education session via Telehealth (Zoom) for 1 hour
Weekly 1.5 hour group sessions across 8 weeks within the clinic environment
Home activities provided after each session to generalise practice to home
A post group report will be prepared to provide a summary & guide next steps.
Parent education sessions will explore:
Navigating the new world of School tech & Social tech
Preparing for new school, new routine
Working collaboratively with your child’s new school
During each group session, the therapist will lead activities and collaboration with the group, with home activities and tasks shared with families to continue school transition preparations at home.
